Splitting axes

Splitting axes are tools that are especially designed for the purpose of splitting wood or wooden pieces. These axes are especially designed to facilitate the splitting of wood, while ensuring minimum risk of damage to the tool. Just like all other axes, splitting axes consist of two parts, one being the handle (generally made of hickory), and a sharp blade, which is made of a strong metal. There are various axe patterns as well as handles that one may choose from while purchasing a splitting axe. The best splitting axe is one which can be gripped well by the user and splits wood conveniently.

The various styles of splitting axes can be broadly classified as the large splitting axes and the small splitting axes. While the large splitting axes are heavier (about 3 1/2 lb) and much larger in size, the small splitting axes are much smaller in size and weigh considerably less (about 2 lb in weight). Also, large splitting axes are comfortably used only by the ones who are more experienced with the job of splitting wood. Small splitting axes, on the other and can be used conveniently by both the experienced as well as inexperienced woodcutters.

Splitting axes also come in a wide range of special features that allow better grip, and control over the axe. Many manufacturers offer axes with grain-leather sheaths or with a snap fastener, for the benefit of the users. Splitting axes such as the small splitting axes that can be used with one hand only, are also given special finishes, so that they provide better control and thus safety for the user.

Splitting axes come in various finishes these days. The price too varies greatly from axe to axe. One may purchase splitting axes either from stores that may be selling axes, (or tools such as knives, hatchets, etc), or one may conveniently order for them on the internet. These days online shopping for axes is not at all a tough job, since all the necessary details such as size, weight, finish, special features, etc are provided along with the pictures of the splitting axes. One may also order for special custom made splitting axes for meeting special requirements, or for the wood splitting competitions, etc.
