It seems that every year, more and more homes are flaunting the Christmas spirit from the inside out. Many of us love to travel the neighborhoods this time of year, enjoying the festive light displays that adorn the streets and homes. However, exterior Christmas decorations do not come without their share of risks and hazards. Consider the fact that you are working with electricity and ladders for most of your decorating efforts, and you can understand why many folk end up in emergency rooms, feeling less than festive after their decorating endeavors. This is why it is so important to begin your Christmas decorating with a few safety tips in mind.

Keeping Ladders Safe

It is an unfortunate truth that outdoor Christmas decorations often require the use of ladders to get those lights where you want them to go. There are a number of steps that you should take when climbing on ladders to ensure a safe decorating experience. First, never decorate solo if you can help it. Having a partner outdoors with you can help to stabilize the ladder, hand you decorations to reduce the number of times you have to climb up and down, and help you out if you get into trouble in a high place. Make sure that your ladder is always set on a stable surface that is level to avoid tipping. Never stand on the top step or the bucket step of your ladder, since these platforms were not designed to hold your weight. And always face toward the ladder when climbing up or down to ensure stability for you.

Keeping the Shock Factor Down

Electricity is another necessary component for outdoor Christmas decorations if you want your house to sparkle after the sun goes down. Besides the worry of climbing high to hang the lights, there is also the concern over receiving an unwanted shock from the electrical wires that you are working with. To keep yourself safe, never use a staple gun to hang lights. Instead, use plastic clips that are safely designed for this purpose. Use only lights that are made for outdoor illumination - it should say on the package whether the strands are designed for indoor or outdoor use. The same is true for the extension cords that you use. Be careful not to overload your circuits with to many extension cords at once, or you could up your risk for a fire. It is never a good idea to leave any Christmas decorations lit overnight or when you are not home.

By following a few basic safety tips, you can help to ensure that you outdoor Christmas decorations will make your holidays merry and bright without the concern over injuries or fire. Christmas is not the time for emergency room visits so get smart and stay safe for your holidays.

This year, many people around the globe will send Christmas cards to share holiday greetings with family and friends. The annual holiday letter has become a popular method for folks to stay in touch and update their circle of acquaintances with family news and events. These traditional cards and letters have evolved over the generations to become the newsletters and greetings that they are today. But there is a long history of the Christmas cards that goes back beyond the modern society to an entirely different century and culture.

English Beginnings

England was the country that saw the first Christmas card more than 150 years ago. In 1843, a man by the name of Sir Henry Cole wanted to find a way to alert his friends to the plight of the poor that Christmas season. He commissioned John Calcott Horsley to paint the first Christmas card with a picture of a happy family surrounded by people helping the poor and needy. The sentiment inside the card simply read, A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you. This simple greeting card was the humble beginnings of what has become a multi-million dollar industry today.

Although Americans were quick to jump on the Christmas card bandwagon, there were no Christmas cards available for purchase in this country for the first 30 years of the trend. Instead, people had to have their cards shipped from England. However, in 1875 that all changed, when a German immigrant named Louis Prang opened his own lithograph shop and sold the first line of American-made cards. Within six years this industrious entrepreneur was producing more than five million cards every year! Today, collectors still enjoy his work with many winter scenes, glowing fireplaces and playing children. You can still find copies of these cards in a variety of collections today.

American Traditions

We have come a long way since the beginnings of Christmas cards in England. Today, you can find Christmas cards in all shapes and sizes; from the spiritual to the humorous and everything in between. You can also find cards for any of the holidays that are celebrated during this time of the year, allowing many to send warm wishes whether they celebrate Christmas or another holiday. Sending Christmas cards and letters has become a holiday tradition for many families, and the source of many humorous anecdotes in this country. But the best part of Christmas cards is to share the wishes and greetings of the season and to keep in touch with friends and family members that you may not have the chance to see or talk to otherwise.

What do you think of when you see a Christmas ornament? It is more than likely that you would picture that bauble hanging from the branch of an evergreen tree in your family room. However, Christmas ornaments are not just for Christmas trees any longer. Which is good news for those who love to collect the sparkling balls and trimmings, and ran out of room on the tree branches to hang their entire sets about the time Mel Torme made The Christmas Song a big hit. Now you can find all kinds of creative uses for those festive decorations, so that you can put touches of the season all through your house.

Hanging Around

It is true that these decorations were designed to hang, but there is no law that says they have to hang from a tree branch. For a touch of the unexpected, try hanging your ornaments from long ribbons in your windows or doorways. You can use a single color scheme for impact or use a variety of hues for a more festive look. If you decide to adorn a doorway in this fashion, make sure that your Christmas ornaments don’t hang too low, or you may have a few bumped heads at your next holiday gathering. Other great locations to hang ornaments are from hanging light fixtures, banisters or fireplace mantles. You can also hang a couple from the ends of your curtain rods to give a festive finish to your window displays.

Fill ‘em Up

Although these baubles are most often seen hanging from something, you can also group them together in decorative bowls or baskets. Add a few pine boughs, pinecones or cinnamon sticks if you like to give a homey touch to tables around the house. You can also use round ornaments of assorted sizes and colors to create beautiful topiaries. Simply attach the Christmas ornaments to a foam shape like a ball or cone with the help of florist wire. Place a stick through the bottom of the shape, and set the stick in a decorative pot. This system can also work to create wreaths and candle rings. For the budget conscious, try picking up boxes of these plain glass balls for pennies once the holidays are over.

Christmas ornaments have become a favorite decoration of many Christmas collectors today. In fact, the popularity of these baubles has indeed grown to the point that there is no longer room on the tree for them. The good news is that there are plenty of creative ways to display your collection of Christmas ornaments that do not require a Christmas tree at all. Have a festive holiday season, and enjoy those Christmas ornaments!

When you think about Christmas songs, you think about Little Drummer Boy, Joy to the World and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. There are so many songs and everyone enjoys them during the holiday season. Many artists record CDs with all the popular Christmas music that provides for hours of listening. Some people have never heard all of the popular Christmas songs, there are over a hundred. Some songs you may not know are Percy, the Puny Poinsettia, That Christmas Feeling or What Christmas Means to Me. The less popular songs are just a much of Christmas as the traditional songs.

Christmas Caroling

Many groups and neighborhoods plan Christmas caroling around the holidays. You will see young and old come together to celebrate the holiday and come to your door and perform Christmas songs as a way of spreading Christmas cheer. They sing the more traditional Christmas songs that everyone knows and loves. You will hear Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, Little Drummer Boy and O Come All Ye Faithful. There are so many lovely songs to sing around the Christmas holiday and having carolers come to you door fills the air with warmth.

Schools Have Christmas Shows

Many schools have Christmas pageants and shows where the students spend weeks rehearsing Christmas songs. Usually within a few weeks before Christmas, you can find area schools advertising their programs that families and friends go to and hear the wonderful sounds of children singing Christmas songs in harmony. The schools put on a show to build students confidence and to provide the community with Christmas spirit. The programs are designed by the students and the teachers and are always very beautifully presented.

Christmas Songs And Parades

Many communities have Christmas parades on Thanksgiving and other weekends as Christmas approaches. You will hear Christmas songs from everywhere. School bands play the songs, as do the other big bands that are included in the parades. Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season and from this time on, you will hear Christmas music all around. Christmas songs play on the radio, on jukeboxes in your favorite watering hole and on the street corners. Some organizations that ring bells for donations also have carolers that sing some Christmas songs to attract people while other organizations sell Christmas songs on CDs. Everywhere you go, you cannot help but hear the sounds and songs of Christmas from speakers, stores and little ones that are gearing up for the special day.

Children learn at a young age that making Christmas crafts is something they do once a year. They do this in school and pre-school as well as some daycare centers. Christmas is a time for giving and making Christmas crafts to give to family and friends is special and make the children happy. They receive so much excitement when they have a school project that is making Christmas decorations, little gifts for giving and sentimental crafts. Children are an inspiration at Christmas time, they learn about sharing, and giving, but when Christmas Day comes, it is their turns to receive.

Some Christmas Crafts For Children To Make

Some Christmas crafts that some find unique to make is the ornament for the Christmas tree. This can be done with paper, beads and pins or glue, paper Mache and ceramics. Many classes make a flour dough and shape it into little gift for parents. You might see an ashtray or a flower vase. Although they are placed in a kiln, you normally keep these as a keepsake. The ornaments are made with a foam ball. Children add beads or something they decide on and use pins or glue to attract the materials to the foam balls.

The Christmas crafts allow children to express themselves while providing a little gift for family and friends. They are sometimes a little awkward looking, but everyone just loves them. Many children make snowflakes from paper. This is actually very easy to do. You simply fold the paper in a triangle or square and snip away in different areas of the paper. These are nice creations for windows.

Some other children’s Christmas crafts are snowmen, Christmas trees out of paper and some draw Christmas pictures. Christmas crafts are not one set thing, there are so many different things you can do for Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Adults Love Christmas Crafts

Many adults make their own Christmas decorations and enjoy starting around Thanksgiving or earlier. They make ornaments, Christmas flower arrangements and little villages with tiny dolls and homes. Hobby shops have everything you need at Christmas time to make some beautiful Christmas crafts.

Many people spend hours decorating their homes and creating some beautiful Christmas decorations. It is the time for everyone to show their creative side and decorate their homes. The possibilities are endless when you think about what you can make for Christmas and anything is possible, especially if you let the children help.

If you are wondering what to give that special someone, you might think about gift cards as the perfect Christmas gifts. Many people enjoy gift cards to their favorite stores where they can buy something they want or maybe add more gifts together to buy a little bigger gift. Many people enjoy the gift cards and the nice thing about them is that they only take a few minutes to find and buy. These are great Christmas gifts for adults and teens, but the younger children still need cute little gifts to open up. When you see the sparkle in their eyes is what makes Christmas gifts and giving so enjoyable.

Women’s Gifts

For her, you might buy perfume, jewelry, clothing or she might even tell you she wants some household products such as casserole dishes, cookware, new dishes or a dishwasher. The thing to remember when shopping for women is never buy household goods unless they give the hint. Christmas gifts are special and you always want to buy them something that will make them smile.

Men’s Christmas Gifts

Well men happen to be the easiest to buy for as far as Christmas gifts. You can buy them tools, clothes, sporting goods, hunting equipment and cologne. Some even enjoy small pieces of jewelry or business supplies. Whatever they do as a hobby or as a job, they usually enjoy anything they do not have to talk it over with you first. Therefore, the Christmas gift list is very open for men.

Teen Christmas Gifts

Teens are sometimes hard to buy for, you can give gift cards to iTunes, there favorite gaming store, clothing stores or even events that interest them. Girls are just as satisfied with gift cards as are the boys. This way they can buy what they want and they do not have to spend time making sure you get just the right CD or Xbox game.

Children’s Christmas Gifts

Children are probably the easiest to buy for with all the new toys that come out every year right before Christmas. You have learning games, activity games, fun games, dolls, cars and household furniture for playing house. It is so much fun shopping for the little ones. They seem to be the happiest with the little things and they are so cute when they open their gifts and squeal with delight and run around showing everyone what they got for Christmas.

One of the most beautiful images during the Christmas holiday is the many Christmas light displays that line the streets and neighborhoods of towns and cities all across America. For many, planning ahead for the holiday Christmas lights display is a yearlong event, often going to the extreme. While there are many famous moments in television and movies that highlight the use of Christmas lights, none are as famous as Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation as he plans and executes his Christmas lights decorations in his front yard. The name Griswold, the characters last name, is now a common slang term to use when referring to someone that uses Christmas lights to excess when decorating for the holidays.

Planning Your Holiday Christmas Lights Display

Planning the use of holiday lights is often a very personal expression of the season. There are many people that cover every single space available on their lawns, rooftop and house. It is even possible to hire a company to deliver and setup designer Christmas lights designed to make your house glow within the darkness, like a beacon for lost ships. In many neighborhoods, neighbors and strangers alike often visit these homes, becoming a sort of icon during the holiday season.

For some, the use of Christmas lights is intended as a way to brighten the season and make their home appear to be cozy and welcoming to guests and strangers alike. Some enjoy the use of the popular icicle holiday lights, which are meant to give the impression of icicles hanging down from the gutters of a home. The soft gentle glow of these white lights is subtle and yet welcoming to passers-by.

A Small Town Christmas Light Display Becomes A Holiday Tradition

In a small town in Washington State, a man was famous within his local area for the Christmas light display that he would put on each year. People from surrounding cities and towns would drive to his neighborhood just to see his Christmas light display. One couple, which grew up in the neighborhood actually held a small private wedding ceremony in his driveway. After many years of popularity and small town fame, this man died in the months preceding the Christmas holiday; that year his family placed a large angel in the front yard with a sign telling all the people who came to see his display that he had passed away and his light display would no longer be seen during the holidays. For many, this was a significant loss in their holiday traditions.

In days of old, the holiday season was filled with the smells of roasted turkey, pumpkin pie and pine trees. Today, sadly, many homes only get the fresh smell of a Christmas pine tree when someone is burning a pine-scented candle.

History Shows That Artificial Christmas Trees Are Flooding The Market

It isn’t any secret that the artificial trees are becoming more and more lifelike than every before. Artificial Christmas trees in the past were stiff, uncompromising and did not arrive with lights already strung. For many, the idea of setting up an artificial tree, stringing the lights and dealing with storage wasn’t that far off from traveling to purchase a natural tree, stringing the lights and disposing of the dried tree at the end of the holiday season. Using a natural tree provided that fresh holiday pine scent and for a little extra money and effort each year, it was worth buying fresh for many people.

However, today’s artificial Christmas trees are much easier to set up, many come pre-strung with Christmas lights and are easy to store in their original box or storage bags. It takes only seconds to set up a pre-strung artificial tree and once set up, the tree can remain on display for an extended period of time without drying out.

The Artificial Christmas Tree Industry Is Strong Competition For Mother Nature

Artificial Christmas Trees are proving a strong competition for Mother Nature as more and more families gather around the artificial Christmas tree on Christmas morning. One of the most valuable reasons to use the artificial Christmas tree is the reduction in fire hazards; the fake tree is simply safer for a family to use. In addition, the artificial tree is a one-time purchase that can be used over and over again.

While An Artificial Christmas Tree Is Easier, It Isn’t The Best Fit For Everyone

If you are someone that enjoys the family outing to hunt for the Holiday Christmas tree, the sweet smell of fresh pine as you set up your tree and the sense of tradition that is built on these types of holiday activities, then an artificial Christmas tree is not for you. It is impossible to get these traditional holiday emotions when shopping for a plastic tree at your local department store.

Finding A Compromise For The Holiday Season

In our house, we compromised for a holiday solution that satisfies everyone. In the living room, which is heated with a woodstove, we use an artificial Christmas tree so that we need not be concerned with the problems of a natural tree drying out or becoming a fire hazard. In the kitchen, another place where heat is a concern, we use another slim fitting artificial Christmas tree. In the family room, a room that is always kept a bit cooler, we use a large natural tree that fills the entire room with the fresh scent of pine. By utilizing this compromise each year, we get the best of both worlds; fire safe trees where it is important to be cautious of fire hazards and the fun holiday tradition of a freshly cut Christmas tree picked out by the little ones from a u-cut tree farm.

Children love the passion of Christmas. While many children are aware of their family’s personal religious feelings regarding the holiday, the religious concepts are often too difficult to understand for my young children. As a holiday symbol, it is Santa and his sleigh full of toys that brings universal joy to nearly every child in America and worldwide. The Christmas holiday is a wonderful childhood memory of love, family and presents. To many, the Christmas stockings hold the most exciting of surprises, filled with toys and treats, this tiny holiday package encapsulates all that is fun in the Christmas holiday.

Christmas Stockings Can Be Purchased At The Store Or Homemade

Christmas stockings can be purchased in a store, made at home or in some homes; the children use their own socks. For many, the idea of using their own sock is a way to get more toys. Some children will search drawers to find soccer or other sports socks so that they can get the greatest stretch and length for Santa to fill with treats.

The store bought variety offer many different sizes but lack the stretch to accommodate a lot of treats. The sock can be filled but only within its size limits, so many children prefer to discover a specialty sock in their own home.

Another alternative when planning for Christmas stockings is to make your own for yourself or your children. The creation of a personalized Christmas stocking is always a great deal of fun. Stockings can be made out of any type of fabric or can be embellished with felt shapes, sequins and glitter.

Ideas For Creating A Personalized Christmas Stocking

Creating a personalized Christmas stocking is a great way to decorate for the holidays and assist Santa in sorting out whose stocking belongs to whom on Christmas Eve. However, keep in mind that the size of stocking is often an indicator of how many toys a child will receive on Christmas morning so be sure to make your Christmas stocking extra big.

As you plan to create your Christmas stockings, whether for you or as gifts for family and friends, try to create a theme around the exterior of the stocking itself. Many people cut felt images out and decorate the exterior face of the stocking with different hobbies, dreams or favorite items of the intended recipient. Creating homemade Christmas stockings is a great way to recognize and celebrate each individual within your home and it creates a fun memory of childhood.

Santa Clause Provides Inspiration For the Holiday Season

Santa Clause always pays attention to children, learning what they like and dislike. He monitors and affects the behavior of each child by way of a naught and nice list, a list that wields quite a bit of power during the holiday season and the months preceding it. But the most important thing about Santa Clause is the magic and glitter that this jolly old elf puts into the smiling eyes of children. There is no greater expression of joy and excitement than a line of children waiting to sit on Santa Clause’s lap and whisper secret wishes into his ear.

Santa Clause Provides A Sure Example Of Determination To Every Child

It is a proven fact that Santa Clause will find a way to get toys delivered all around the world in just one night, ask any child. Santa Clause is a symbol of hard work, as he and his elves build all the toys you know, and determination as he will fly all night in his sleigh full of toys to answers the secret wishes of every child. Children understand this dedication and depend upon Santa Clause to provide this type of security that is promised by his reputation. Santa Clause is a powerful figure in childhood, erasing the reality of difficult lives, divorce, unhappiness and sorrow with a red and white suit and the power of hope and love.

Santa Clause It A Great Behavior Modifier Within Homes Around The World

The idea of coal and sticks on Christmas morning is a great behavior modifier within most homes during the holidays. Today it is possible to send Santa emails or call him on the telephone if children act up or misbehaves, prompting an immediate behavior change by naughty children.

In many homes, a simple reminder that Santa Clause is watching can prompt instant compliance by most children for fear that their Christmas stockings will only hold the coal and sticks that is given to boys and girls on the naughty list. Many boys and girls spend a great deal of time making up for naughty behavior during the holiday season, just to change the location of their name on Santa Clause’s holiday gift list.
