Alfred Nobel was an amazing writer, scientist, inventor, and business man. He lived his life exploring the various areas that held his interest at any given time. He was a very wealthy man who lived a prosperous life. One of the things Alfred Nobel is best known for is leaving behind money in his will to fund what we know at the Nobel Peace Prize that has been awarded annually since 1901.

History of Nobel Prize

Since the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896 the funds he left have been in a trust and given to honor those for their contributions to society. The amount of money left in the trust fund was more than $9 million. The first Nobel Prize was given in 1901. However this entire process almost didn’t come to be. The remaining family members of Alfred Nobel contested his will but they were not successful. The funds were placed in the trust and the first receivers of the Nobel Prize was chosen on the fifth anniversary of Nobel’s death.

Nobel Peace Prize

Due to the monetary donations left behind by Alfred Nobel the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to worthy individuals each year. This has been taking place since 1901 to reward individuals for their work in the areas of physics, literature, chemistry, medicine, and efforts for peace.

Nobel Prize Winners

Since the Nobel Prize was introduced in 1901 766 people have been honored with receiving medals, diplomas, and cash awards for their efforts. Of those 766 winners only 33 of them have been women. The first woman to win the Nobel Prize was Marie Curie in 1903. She is the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice (the second time was in 1911). In addition to Curie, there have been some other multiple winners. Three men have also won it twice for their accomplishments.

Alfred Nobel was a very wealthy scientist and writer. He is famous for inventing dynamite and other forms of explosives. Upon his death 1895 he left more than $9 million in a trust to be distributed in honor of those who contributed something significant to society. The individuals can be from any location around the world.
