Cold War Propaganda

Cold War propaganda has been used by countries throughout the world to promote support for their views on the wars they are involved in. It is clearly a tool to get the public to accept what is being told to them. It is hoped that they will do so without questioning it. For example, the United States and the Soviet Union have two very different political systems. The United States used that in their favor. By continually portraying the Soviet Union as being communistic and not interested in the needs of the people, the people of the United States became more appreciative of their freedoms and more supportive of their own government.

Movies in Hollywood were created to further push cold war propaganda. Such movies portrayed other countries including the Soviet Union and Germany as being cold, violent countries, with a population of people who were scared and suffering. These movies were meant to encourage more American’s to join the armed forces. It was also meant to make them more appreciative of the opportunities in the United States, and get people to stop questioning the moves of the government. The ultimate goal was to get the people to back and support the war decisions the government was making without question.

Politics can be very powerful. It is easy to get caught up in what is being said, especially about other countries. Don’t be so quick to accept everything at face value. If more people had questioned the propaganda of Germany during the rein of Adolph Hitler, we may have been able to prevent the holocaust from ever have taken place.
