Farms
Most of us have a vision in your mind that form when we think of the word farm. We often envision a nice house with a white picket fence, a big red barn, and a few animals here and there. Farms are areas of land that are used to grow various products. This includes food such as corn and wheat, tobacco, even animals such as chicken farms.
Farmers spend their days preparing their land for planting what they want to grow. Some climates and soils are good for planting particular kinds of products. Farmers also tend to their crops and other products on a daily basis. The life of a farmer is one of long hours and hard work. Even with the modern pieces of equipment they can use it still takes plenty of patience to get the products to grow as they should.
Farmers have to prepare themselves for the fact that the elements may have other plans for their products. In many areas a lack of water supply mixed with drought conditions can cause the products to not be very marketable. In other cases severe winds, tornadoes, or flooding can ruin the production as well. To reduce the amount of risk involved most farmers buy insurance to cover the cost of their products. This way they don’t have to worry about not having money to continue their operation.
Some farms are small and only the owner of the land tends to it. Others are quite large and so there are several employees needed to keep things running smoothly. Farming is a year round operation as there is always something that needs taking care of. Farmers have to work hard to keep their machinery in good condition. Farm equipment is not cheap so many pieces of it have to last for years.
Farmers sell their products to various entities. It depends on what they are growing. In many areas farmers sell their fresh produce to various markets in the area. Others have contracts with shippers and even with the government to supply a set volume of the product. Most farmers love being able to spend their time working with the land. In many instances farming is a family tradition and the land is passed down to future generations.
