Mining
Mining is the concept of removing various minerals that are found in the Earth. They are generally found in specific locations. History is full of information on old mining towns that boomed when gold and other minerals were discovered in the area.
Mines are underground areas where the minerals are extracted from. Mules used to be used to carry the minerals from the depths of the mine to the surface. After the railroad was introduced many mines developed a railway system with carts that would carry it to the surface much faster.
There are many different types of minerals that can be mined for. They include gold, silver, nickel, diamonds, metal, and limestone. These minerals have to be mined because they can’t be reproduced anywhere else. Setting up a mining operation can be time consuming and expensive. Prospectors go in search of good locations that contain various minerals. They also have to determine the value of the minerals that are in the area.
Before any mining can be done the land has to be purchased from the rightful owner. This can be a lengthy process and one that doesn’t come cheap. The value of the mining operation has to be estimated well to determine if this is cost effective or not.
The event of mining can be difficult work and therefore miners are paid quite well. Many of the early miners died at a young age due to the physical toll it took on their bodies. Many believe the air they were breathing contained toxins that caused lung and heart problems. Many miners lost their eyesight due to the amount of time they spent in the dark areas underground.
Mines could give way at any time and many lives were lost in mining accidents throughout history. Today there are more safety mechanisms in place for the air to be cleaner and to prevent cave ins. The mine is also tested for contaminates on a regular basis. However mining accidents continue today with some of them having tragic endings to them.
The media coverage of such events has lead to even better conditions in the area of mining. However it continues to be classified as one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Until there is a better method introduced for extracting minerals from the Earth though mining will continue to be a booming industry.
