Olympians
Olympians are those individuals who train to participate in some part of the Olympic Games. Top athletes from all over the world attend training at the various centers set up for them. Olympians do not get paid for their training time or even for their participation in the Olympics. Since so much of their time is tied up in training they really don’t have the opportunity to hold down a job. Their expenses are covered by scholarships, donations, and grants.
Many families sacrifice and even relocate so that their child can be close to the Olympic training center. That isn’t always possible though so some younger athletes go without their families. They do try to continue their education while training for the Olympics. Many individuals who compete in the Olympics do get scholarships to good colleges and even go on to professional sports.
Yet the opportunity to participate in the Olympics is an honor many athletes strive for. It is not uncommon for Olympians to end up becoming professional athletes later in their career. In the United States there are three locations where Olympians train ñ Colorado Springs Colorado, Chula Vista California, and Lake Placid New York. The Colorado Springs location is the United States Olympics Headquarters. Those in training reside at the Olympic Training Center.
All three of the Olympic training centers offer free tours for the public on specified days. This is a great way to find out more about the Olympians who have trained there. Many of the Olympians participate in community action groups to help promote sports in others. They definitely are expected to take on a leadership role for others.
In addition to training physically for their Olympic Games competition, these Olympians learn about health, nutrition, and get prepared mentally for competition. The goal is to prepare them completely for competing in the Olympics while instilling an ethical behaviors and personal commitment in each of them.
Olympians take great pride in representing their country and it shows during their competition. Yet what we see as viewers during the Olympic Games is just one short period of time. Keep in mind all the hard work that they have done to get them to that point where they are ready to compete against the very best athletes from around the world.
