Those individuals who participate in figure skating definitely make the concept of ice skating look like it is very simple. The reality is that figure skating takes hours of practice each day to get to that point. People love to watch these individuals skate because they combine it with graceful movements, turns, leaps, spins, and jumps. There is a huge risk of skating on a frozen pond or lake though because the ice can crack and you could find yourself underwater. Ice skating is a very popular sport but one that is harder to learn than it looks. It takes plenty of practice to learn to manipulate your way around on the blades. It takes strong ankles to be able to hold yourself up as well. A pair of ice skates look quite similar to a pair of boots that lace up. At the bottom of the boot is a thin skate that will need to be sharpened from time to time.

Speed Skating

Speed skating has become quite popular in recent years and it is one of the most watched events in the Olympics. This sport involves skating as fast as you can along a set route. In many instances it is going around a particular track many times, almost like a NASCAR race but with humans on skates instead of in cars. There are two lanes on the oval track for skaters to compete on. The standard track size is 400 meters.
