Tips in Playing Table Tennis

Table tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world. The person doesn’t need that much in order to play this sport. This is because all the individual needs is a paddle which can be bought at the nearest sporting goods store.

When playing this game, here are a few tips worth knowing so that the individual will not look silly on the first day of learning from an instructor.

1. It will be a good idea to do some research on the game. It is important to know the terminologies, rules and various techniques so the person will not have a hard time understanding the lesson being given by the instructor.

2. The person should choose the right racket for the job. New players do not have to buy the model that will cost $80 or more because there are good ones that are half the price. Someone can accompany the individual in finding a suitable paddle if the player has a hard time in picking one.

A good racket can be used both defensively and offensively and the instructor will later teach this to the student.

3. Loose clothing should be worn. Learning table tennis is like going to gym for physical education. The individual should wear a shirt, shorts and rubber shoes since it takes speed to react to a ball that is coming toward the person.

4. The individual should take down some notes if these are important. Some people listen but do not remember what is said later and that may cause problems later when everyone is already playing on the table.

5. Most instructors will teach the handshake method in holding the racket. The proper way should be for the pinky, index and middle finger to go around the handle. The thumb and forefinger should form a V shape. If the person has a hard time, it is best to imagine that the racket is someone else’s hand.

There are three signs that will tell if this is done correctly. The thumb and forefinger are on opposites sides of the racket. The arm is the one controlling the direction where the racket will swing. Lastly, the wrist is not bending.

6. The player must practice as often as possible. This means doing the same thing at home using the dining table that is pushed all the way to the wall or with the help of someone at home.

This will ensure the person that the lessons learned in class will be remembered and done consistently the following day.

7. Before a match, it is best to check the equipment. This means making sure the racket and a set of balls are there which will give the individual time to warm up before the game.

8. Another way to prepare for a match will be to swing around a few times using a heavier racket. People who practice using a heavier paddle will find it easier to move when a lighter one is used during the game.

There are a lot of tips to remember to be able to play a good game of table tennis. The individual should have the right equipment; listen to the instructor, practice often and the right attitude in order to perform better than the opponent.
