Triathletes are those who train and participate in triathlons. These events that require participants to complete three areas of competition: bicycling, swimming, and running. The length of the event depends on the category they are participating in. However even a short triathlon involves several miles of competition. The swimming competition is the shortest with the bicycle and running portions being fairly close to each other in the distance.
A triathlete needs to train in all three areas so that they are ready for competition. They also have to learn to monitor their speed and their endurance so they don’t burn out before the end of the race. Since the races are held in a variety of different locations they have to adjust to different temperatures, climates, and terrains.
There are triathlons for children as well as young adults, middle aged adults, and even senior citizens. A thriathlete commonly starts with shorter level competitions and build up their strength and endurance to start competing in longer events.
The goal of most triathletes is to participate in an iron man competition. This is the longest standard distance race. The swimming portion covers 3.8 km, the bicycling part is 180km, and the running portion covers 42.195km.
Triathletes earn points for the how they place in the various local and regional triathlons. The top ranking individuals are then invited to participate at a National level. Those chosen for Nationals are from different age groups. There are also a set number of males and females selected so it doesn’t necessarily mean the top times in that category.
They also have to learn the various rules of the competitions so that they don’t get disqualified. Most of the rules are standard such as being a good sport, wearing the right safety equipment, and making sure you register on time of the event. There are also rules that relate to when an individual can be disqualified and when a time penalty can be added to their overall time for completing the event.
These rules are designed to keep the sport fair and to protect those participating and the spectators. Thriathletes should be very proud of their accomplishments because they have strength, endurance, and discipline beyond what most of us have. Perhaps that is why people enjoy watching the events so much.
