Triathletes are those who train and participate in triathlons. These events that require participants to complete three areas of competition: bicycling, swimming, and running. The length of the event depends on the category they are participating in. However even a short triathlon involves several miles of competition. The swimming competition is the shortest with the bicycle and running portions being fairly close to each other in the distance.

A triathlete needs to train in all three areas so that they are ready for competition. They also have to learn to monitor their speed and their endurance so they don’t burn out before the end of the race. Since the races are held in a variety of different locations they have to adjust to different temperatures, climates, and terrains.

There are triathlons for children as well as young adults, middle aged adults, and even senior citizens. A thriathlete commonly starts with shorter level competitions and build up their strength and endurance to start competing in longer events.

The goal of most triathletes is to participate in an iron man competition. This is the longest standard distance race. The swimming portion covers 3.8 km, the bicycling part is 180km, and the running portion covers 42.195km.

Triathletes earn points for the how they place in the various local and regional triathlons. The top ranking individuals are then invited to participate at a National level. Those chosen for Nationals are from different age groups. There are also a set number of males and females selected so it doesn’t necessarily mean the top times in that category.

They also have to learn the various rules of the competitions so that they don’t get disqualified. Most of the rules are standard such as being a good sport, wearing the right safety equipment, and making sure you register on time of the event. There are also rules that relate to when an individual can be disqualified and when a time penalty can be added to their overall time for completing the event.

These rules are designed to keep the sport fair and to protect those participating and the spectators. Thriathletes should be very proud of their accomplishments because they have strength, endurance, and discipline beyond what most of us have. Perhaps that is why people enjoy watching the events so much.

For anyone who is going to participate in a triathlon it is important to understand the rules before the event takes place. You can be disqualified if you don’t follow the rules and that would be very disappointing considering all of the training and hard work that goes into preparing for a triathlon.

While some of the specifics may vary by triathlon event the overall rules remain the same. They are in place to help promote good sportsmanship, to reward individuals for their abilities, and to keep the events safe for everyone who participates as well as for the spectators of the event. Here are some of the basic rules for you to become familiar with.

If the triathlon is sponsored by the USA Triathlon program then each participant must have a current membership in order to participate. If there is a deadline for registering participants must submit their information. Late entries are not accepted and there are no exceptions to that rule. For personal safety individuals can only participate in those triathlons at their level of ability.

Each participant in a triathlon is expected to complete the entire race unless an injury or unforeseen circumstances arise. Each participant is expected to be a good sport before, during, and after the event. There are penalties for obstructing someone else from being able to participate. You can be disqualified from event if the referee sees fit. In most instances a time penalty will be added to your overall finishing time for the event.

There are specific rules for assistance during the triathlon from people on your team. Make sure you find out what they are for the event you are participating in. These rules include how and when they can hand you a towel or a drink. In most instances you have to leave the course to take care of such issues and then return to the point where you exited.

During the swimming part of the competition the participants can use any combination of strokes they prefer. All participants are asked to wear a colored swim cap that is assigned to them. Goggles are allowed if the individual wants to use them. For the bicycling portion of the event the bike can only be propelled by the force of the participant. A helmet must be worn during this portion of the triathlon.

In the running portion of the event it is acceptable to alternate running and walking as long as the entire distance is covered. A triathlon can be a great challenge and plenty of fun but make sure you take the time to know the rules for the event as well.

Triathlons are competitive sporting events that involve the individuals participating in three different areas ñ swimming, running, and bicycling. The distances for each section of the race may vary. The events are fast paced and the participants transition from one even to the next very quickly. It is important for participants in a triathlon to be proficient in each of the areas and to use the energy they have wisely. Otherwise they will have difficulty finishing the race.

Triathlons take place in various locations all over the world. The first one was held in France in 1920. They weren’t very popular though until the mid 1970’s when a group of people in California were training together. Some of them were runners, some swimmers, and others where bicyclists. The hosted the first Triathlon in the United States in 1974. 46 people came to participate in the event.

The length of each portion of the triathlon depends on the ages and the skill levels of the individuals. There are triathlons for everyone from children to the elderly. There are standard lengths for the Olympics and other annual events but other than that the event sponsors can determine the length of each leg of the triathlon.

In most instances participants have to register in advance for a triathlon. They will be educated in the rules of the event, the course, and the length of each leg of the triathlon. This gives the participants time to train for the event and to ask any questions they may have.

There are triathlons that take place all over the world. You can choose the type of terrain you enjoy. They range from the desert, the mountains, and even in the jungles. There are triathlons that take place all year long including the winter. It is important to train for the event in the type of environment it will take place in. This way your body can adjust.

There are triathlons held on regional and National levels. Most of the time the participates have to accumulate enough points from their regional events in order to qualify for a limited number of spots available for the regional event. There are even triathlons that are part of the Olympic Games.
