The issues of air marshals on public airplanes became a hot topic after the terrorist attacks of 09/011/01. Yet most people don’t know that the Sky Marshal program has been in place since 1975. This was done because of the high risk of United States airplanes being hijacked by Cubans. President Ronald Reagan added additional air marshals during his Presidency in 1985 as well. He felt the number of air marshals in the air was not sufficient.

Emergency Exists

Before any airplane takes off, the passengers are instructed about safety information including oxygen masks, floating devices, and the emergency exits. All of these exists of an airplane are clearly marked. Those individuals sitting in the seats by the emergency exists need to be strong enough to open them. They also have to be willing to help other people in the event of an accident. If they are not unable to do this or they are unwilling to take on the responsibility they have to be given the option of moving. The individuals must be at least 15 years of age as well.

Preflight Safety Checks

Preflight safety checks are routinely done on all aircrafts before they are put into motion for a flight to take place. This is complete routine maintenance as well as to identify any issues that may be taking place with the aircraft. Preventive safety checks are done to ensure the plane is safe to fly and to prevent the risk of a crash from happening while in flight.

Seatbelts

Wearing a seatbelt is mandatory in an airplane during the takeoff, prior to landing, and at times throughout the flight depending on the weather and turbulence. The pilot will make the decision as to when passengers have to have it on and when they can take it off if they choose. All airplane seatbelts are lap belt styles that snap into the latch. Most of them open easily with just the push of a button.
