Preflight Safety Checks
Preflight safety checks are routinely done on all aircrafts before they are put into motion for a flight to take place. This is complete routine maintenance as well as to identify any issues that may be taking place with the aircraft. Preventive safety checks are done to ensure the plane is safe to fly and to prevent the risk of a crash from happening while in flight.
Due to downsizing and budget issues, many major airlines have cut back in the area of preflight safety checks. This doesn’t sit well with passengers who are weary to get on board planes belonging to such airlines. Passenger safety should be a priority and these airlines are not conveying the message to consumers. For many airlines this has led to further financial woes for them to contend with.
More than $10 billon is spent by airlines annually for preflight safety checks and repairs. Each airline determines its own schedule for when it inspects the various aircrafts. Many airlines rely on computers in their computer systems. It is believed that 3 hours are spent inspecting an airplane for each hour it is in the air during the life of the aircraft.
Most preflight safety checks have to be done with a complete checklist of items to cover. The individual who completes each particular area of the safety check signs off on it. This way there is some individual responsibility for the quality of the preflight safety check if questionable activities arise later. The pilot generally gets a copy of this safety check before he boards the plane.
Sometimes the information found during a preflight safety check requires the airplane to be delayed for take off while the necessary repairs are done. In some instances the flight may be canceled completely or require another plane to take its place. It is illegal to place an aircraft into flight when it did not pass the preflight safety check.
A preflight safety check also takes place inside of the airplane. All of the items are checked to make sure they are secure. Any problems are identified and taken care of before passengers are allowed to board the plane. All of this is to ensure the flight goes off all well as possible each and every time.
