Great Lakes

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

The Great Lakes are several large lakes that are partially in the United States and partially in Canada. They are called the Great Lakes because of how large they are. They are freshwater so they can’t be called seas, but they are big enough in size to be that. The Great lakes consist of Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior. They can be remembered by knowing the acronym HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). They are actually considered the largest group of lakes on Earth that have freshwater not salt water in them. It is also important to understand that there are some smaller lakes that are part of what’s known as the ‘Great Lakes System’ but since they are considerably smaller in size, they are not part of the ‘Great Lakes’ themselves.

Lake Erie

Lake Erie is one of the five great lakes. There are other, small lakes as part of the Great Lakes System but those smaller lakes are not actually considered the Great Lakes. Lake Erie is definitely one of the Great Lakes. It is quite large. It is interesting visiting a lake that is so large that it actually seems like a sea. They are vast. Lake Erie is no exception. In terms of statistics, Lake Erie is the fourth largest when taking the area into account. It is also the lake that is furthest south and has the shallowest depth. In terms of volume, meaning the actual amount of water that is in it, Lake Erie is also the smallest. That makes sense since it has the least amount of depth. The more depth something has, the greater the volume. Lake Erie also has several borders including Canada, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

When it comes to the Great Lakes such as Lake Michigan there are a lot of things that you can do to try to understand them. First of all, most of them are so huge that they border several states and also Canada. Lake Michigan is no exception. However it is the only one of the lakes that does not border Canada. If you are curious as to what it looks like you can do an internet search for it. There are a lot of pictures that come up during this search. The sun sets right over a part of the lake. The only thing you need to do is remember that the Lake is beautiful and is also a part of a bigger group.

Lake Superior

Lake Superior is one of the five great lakes. This is not only the largest freshwater lake of the five Great Lakes when surface area is taken into account, but it is also considered the largest in the world. And in terms of volume, it is the third largest freshwater lake. When lakes are measured, they take into account a lot of different measurements. Volume takes into account both surface area and depth and surface area just takes into account how big something is when the depth isn’t considered. Both measurements are taken of the lake in order to help you learn something about it.
