Great Lakes
Sunday, November 4th, 2007The Great Lakes are several large lakes that are partially in the United States and partially in Canada. They are called the Great Lakes because of how large they are. They are freshwater so they can’t be called seas, but they are big enough in size to be that. The Great lakes consist of Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior. They can be remembered by knowing the acronym HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). They are actually considered the largest group of lakes on Earth that have freshwater not salt water in them. It is also important to understand that there are some smaller lakes that are part of what’s known as the ‘Great Lakes System’ but since they are considerably smaller in size, they are not part of the ‘Great Lakes’ themselves.
