Greek Culture
The history of Greek culture is very interesting and it accounts for many aspects of the area today. Religion has always played a vital role for the people Greece. They built amazing cathedrals and statues to worship them.
The gods were given the looks and the abilities of humans but they were also believed to have super human powers that made them above all others. They also had the gift of beauty that would never be taken away because they did not age.
Both men and women were very involved in literature and preserving the history and culture of the area. This is what is believed to have opened the doors to Greek mythology. These stories have been passed on from generation to generation while including the various aspects of the culture.
Politics were an area most men were involved in according to the early records of Greek culture. Men were very controlling in the Greek culture. They often enjoyed parties, sports, hunting, and get togethers but women were not allowed to join in. They were allowed to attend weddings and funerals with their husband’s permission.
Women were responsible for keeping the home running smoothly. As a gift from their husband most women had a slave to complete housework and cook meals. To ensure women did not venture out male slaves were hired to watch them. No male visitors were allowed to the home in the absence of the husband.
Children remained in the home of their parents until they reached the age of 30! By that time they were often responsible for caring for their parents. If the parents died then the children left to care for themselves regardless of age.
The Greeks paid plenty of attention to their looks and their physical fitness. This lead to them holding games every four years known as the Olympics. While plenty has changed in the Greek culture over time traditions of the Olympic Games are alive and well.
The people of Greece are still quite religious but thank goodness women enjoy more freedoms now than they did in the types of ancient Greece. Visiting Greece is like taking a step back into history. You can visit the remains of the early days in Greece including the beautiful coliseums and statues.
