When you place the pencil on the book, be sure to balance it precariously on the edge of the book. Then when you lower your head, secretly blow air out of your mouth onto the book to your side of the pencil. The air will be strong enough to move the pencil and most of your audience will be either focusing on your waving hands, or the pencil itself and will be none the wiser.
